 FC Barcelona win 47th European Cup

The Women's team's triumph against Lyon in Bilbao adds another trophy to the long list of blaugrana achievements in Europe's premier club competitions.

Champions League final bête noire defeated as Barça Women overcame Olympique Lyonnais Féminin to retain their title as European Champions to add to the win over Wolfsburg the season before in Eindhoven. This time in Bilbao in a stadium awash with blaugrana, Jonatan Giráldez' side again showed that they are the best team in the world.

This latest European trophy - the third for the women's football team - means the FC Barcelona professional teams have now won 47 European Cups. It also makes it eight for the football teams now, three for the women's side as mentioned, and five for the men's first team.

The basketball team have also won a couple, while the futsal side have won four, coming very close to a fifth this season. Lastly, the roller hockey side still reign supreme with 22 Champions League wins, double the 11 won by the handball team.

The referee of England’s Euro 2024 semi-final is a convicted match fixer who was slated by Jude Bellingham after taking control a controversial Bundesliga match. Felix Zwayer, who will oversee Wednesday’s Three Lions’ fixture with the Netherlands, was banned for six months after being found to have accepted a €300 (£253.82) bribe from fellow referee Robert Hoyzer in a 2005 scandal.  And, after he oversaw Borussia Dortmund’s contentious 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in 2021 then Dortmund star Bellingham, who will play on Wednesday night, hit out at his appointment and was subsequently fined. ‘You can look at a lot of the decisions in the game,’ Bellingham said in a post-match TV interview.  ‘You give a referee, that has match-fixed before, the biggest game in Germany. Agents have accused clubs of double-standards over two of the biggest deals this summer, with pressure piled on players to move to a different club before the end of their contract. Conor Gallagher has agreed a move to Atletico Madrid in Spain after it was made clear he risked being left out of the first-team squad if he did not sign a new deal, with a year remaining on his existing terms. Manchester United’s Leny Yoro, meanwhile, moved from Lille after the French club’s president described the youngster as having an “exit voucher” this summer due being in the last year of his contract.
